PIM sparse mode
PIM Sparse Mode (PIM-SM) is a PIM mode that forwards traffic only when specifically requested by receivers. It uses a central Rendezvous Point (RP) to coordinate the multicast traffic forwarding between the multicast source and the destination. RP is a router that serves as the meeting point for the source and the receivers. Multicast sources register with the RP through their first hop router. They send a copy of the multicast traffic to the receivers through the RP.
